Costa: Ukraine must be in the strongest possible position
Paris, January 6 (Hibya) – Council of Europe President Antonio Costa stated that Ukraine should be in the strongest possible position before, during, and after any ceasefire.
Costa announced that they held a productive and important meeting within the framework of the Voluntary Coalition in Paris to further advance their support for Ukraine.
Costa stated that they are ready to commit to a system of security guarantees that will be legally binding and will come into effect with the implementation of the ceasefire. He emphasized, “The European Union will contribute to efforts to provide the security guarantees that Ukraine needs under any agreement aimed at achieving permanent and sustainable peace.”
In this context, Costa expressed that the EU’s support for Ukraine’s progress in the accession process, which is a key element for its future prosperity, will continue. He stated, “As part of the 90 billion euros loan framework approved by the European Council last December, contributions will be made to meet Ukraine’s financial needs over the next two years. A portion of these funds will be allocated to Ukraine’s Armed Forces, who form the first line of defense against aggression.”
Costa also highlighted that support would be provided through the EU’s civil and military missions on the ground, adding, “Ukraine must be in the strongest possible position before, during, and after any ceasefire.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that during the "Voluntary Leaders Coalition" meeting in Paris, which was attended by EU member states, NATO allies, and friends of Ukraine, a strong show of unity for Ukraine was displayed.
Von der Leyen expressed that their joint statements sent a clear message, saying, “We are all united with Ukraine, and ahead of us is a secure, peaceful, and prosperous future.”
