Fears that hundreds may have died in Afghanistan earthquake
Stockholm, September 1 (Hibya) – There are fears that hundreds of people may have lost their lives in the earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan at a depth of just 8 km.
Officials reported that at least 20 people were killed and more than 100 injured and being treated in hospitals, but fears remain that hundreds more may have died.
Multiple sources from the Taliban government said that dozens of houses are “under the rubble.”
Taliban government officials called on humanitarian aid organizations to assist in rescue efforts in remote mountainous areas accessible only by air due to landslides and flooding.
The quake shook buildings as far away as Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, more than 300 km from Kabul.
Health Ministry spokesman Sherafat Zaman said: “According to unconfirmed reports, about 30 people from one village have died, but there is still no exact death toll.”
He added that three villages were “completely destroyed and heavily damaged.” “Some of the injured have been evacuated, and those trapped under destroyed houses have been rescued.”
“The number of injured and dead is probably higher, but since access and communications in the area are limited, our teams are still on the ground. Once exact figures are collected, God willing, we will share them with you,” Sherafat Zaman said, adding that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
