Ghebreyesus condemns attacks on health services
Geneva, 11 December (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that attacks on health services must stop.
Ghebreyesus expressed profound shock at the attack on Mrauk-U Hospital in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
He noted that at least 33 people — including health workers, patients, and family members — were killed, and 20 others injured.
“The hospital infrastructure has suffered severe damage; operating theatres and the main inpatient ward have been completely destroyed. Mrauk-U General Hospital is the primary health facility in the region, providing emergency and general care, maternity services, and surgical capacity. This attack will significantly disrupt communities' access to healthcare. This is the 67th confirmed attack on a health facility reported by WHO Myanmar this year.”
Ghebreyesus emphasized that every attack on health services is an attack on humanity: “Health facilities, patients, and health workers must always be protected. Attacks on health services must stop.”
