Ghebreyesus: One in two people in Haiti is hungry
Geneva, October 10 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that one in every two people in Haiti is hungry.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that data from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification show that half of Haiti’s population is suffering from hunger.
In his statement, Ghebreyesus said: “Among the factors driving hunger and malnutrition across the country are unrelenting gang violence and a more than 30 percent increase in food costs since last year.”
He added that the WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health in screening, referring, and managing people suffering from severe malnutrition, but emphasized that the health needs of malnourished patients are much higher.
