Guterres: The power of the law must prevail
New York, January 5 (Hibya) – United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement on the situation in Venezuela.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that developments in Venezuela must be addressed in line with the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
Pointing to the importance of fundamental diplomatic and legal frameworks in the current complex process, Guterres outlined the approach that should be followed in resolving crises.
Stressing the cornerstones of the international system, Guterres said: “In complex and confusing situations like the one we are currently facing in Venezuela, it is important to adhere to principles: respect for the UN Charter; respect for the sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity of states; and the prohibition of the threat or use of force.”
Referring to the rule of law and resolution mechanisms, Guterres concluded: “The power of the law must prevail. International law contains tools to address issues such as drug trafficking, resource disputes, and human rights problems. This is the path we must follow.”
