US Navy's Supply Operation to Antarctica
Washington, January 7 (Hibya) - Reserve personnel from the US Military Sealift Command (MSC) have begun cargo operations in California to supply the McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
According to the US Department of Defense, US Navy reservists are supporting cargo operations in Port Hueneme, California, as part of preparations for the "Operation Deep Freeze 2026" supply mission.
The four-person team is overseeing the loading process of 302 pieces of equipment onto the chartered heavy-lift vessel Plantijngracht.
The operation, which began on December 21, 2025, includes construction materials, equipment, parts for the ongoing floating dock project, and dry food and supplies necessary for survival in Antarctica.
One of the most notable elements of this year's operation is the 65-ton floating modular causeway system. In previous years, ice piers made of construction rebar and frozen seawater were used, but this year, due to the size and weight of the cargo, the ice pier was deemed unusable.
