Harris: Veronica Guerin’s legacy lives on
Dublin, June 26 (Hibya) - Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris issued a commemorative message marking the 30th anniversary of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris noted that 30 years have passed since Veronica Guerin was murdered on the Naas Road.
Harris said, “Today marks 30 years since Veronica Guerin was murdered on the Naas Road. Everyone in Ireland of a certain age remembers where they were on this day thirty years ago.”
Emphasizing that the murder was an attack on democracy and press freedom, Harris stated, “Her murder was an attack on our democracy, on press freedom, and on every Irish citizen’s right to know about the criminals who were destroying our communities. It was a savage and ruthless crime.”
Highlighting Guerin’s legacy, Harris said, “Her legacy lives on through her fearless investigative journalism, the establishment of the Criminal Assets Bureau, and the granting of greater powers to An Garda Síochána to combat crime.”
