President Herzog said in a statement at the Mount Herzl National Memorial, “In this place that symbolizes pain and loss, I had the privilege this evening of writing a letter in the Torah in memory of our fallen.”

Noting that the event took place on the eighth night of Hanukkah, Herzog added, “Here we carried out an act that reflects continuity, light, and a deep faith in the spirit of Israel.”

Herzog said the history of the Israeli people “has been written from generation to generation with blood and tears, but also with hope,” adding, “Our enemies sought to destroy our people; we hold a sword in one hand and a pen in the other.”

Thanking the families of the fallen and memorial institutions, Isaac Herzog said, “Thus, we will continue to write the next chapter of our lives together with responsibility and love.”
