Lazzarini: Disinformation targeting UNRWA is being used as a weapon
New York, Dec. 21 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), drew attention to the impact of disinformation campaigns targeting the agency on Palestinian refugees.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Lazzarini said, “Disinformation is a global problem. For more than two years, a coordinated campaign targeting UNRWA has been using disinformation as a weapon.”
To correct a common misconception highlighted in the campaigns, Lazzarini noted, “There is a claim that UNRWA keeps Palestinian refugees in a state of perpetual uncertainty. In reality, refugees retain their status where they are in the absence of fair and lasting political solutions.”
Emphasizing that shutting down UNRWA without a political solution would not end the status of Palestinian refugees, Lazzarini said, “Those who will pay the price are the poorest refugees—those living in camps and relying solely on UNRWA for education, health care, and basic services.”
Lazzarini added that a solution is possible only through investment in peace and strengthened Palestinian institutions, warning that disinformation can cause real harm to the most vulnerable populations in the Middle East.
