Luxon said, “To everyone who suffered abuse in state care, today we acknowledge you and thank you for your advocacy and your contribution to strengthening protections that prevent the suffering of vulnerable and voiceless people.”

He noted that since the government’s apology last year, significant progress has been made in promoting systemic change to ensure children’s safety.

“As part of this effort,” he said, “the 2025 Budget will invest 774 million dollars over four years to improve the compensation process for survivors of abuse in state care and to strengthen initiatives for prevention, detection, and intervention in abuse cases.”

Luxon added, “We cannot undo the past, but as a government, we are determined to build a future where every child is safe, valued, and protected.”
