Roberta Metsola said, “Europe now has a common list of safe countries of origin and updated rules for the application of the safe third country concept. The agreements reached between the European Parliament and the EU Council make Europe’s asylum system more efficient, more flexible, and more coherent.”

Metsola noted that the new rules will strengthen borders, speed up procedures, and provide support to member states under pressure, describing this as an important step toward the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact.

In her statement, Metsola also thanked those who contributed to the process, expressing her appreciation to the Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Justice and to the rapporteurs for their work.
