Prevot: There is no military solution to the crisis in Ethiopia
Brussels, October 2 (Hibya) - Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in northern Ethiopia and called on the parties to de-escalate and engage in dialogue.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, together with the United Nations, the African Union and the European Union, expressed concern over the situation in northern Ethiopia.
Prevot said, “I am deeply concerned by the rapidly deteriorating situation in northern Ethiopia and urgently call for de-escalation.”
Stating that there is no military solution to the crisis, Prevot said, “Differences can only be resolved through dialogue. I strongly support African Union-led mediation efforts and the full implementation of the Agreement for the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities.”
Prevot emphasized that respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty and international humanitarian law is imperative, noting that civilians must be protected under all circumstances and that the neutrality and independence of humanitarian operations must be respected.
Stating that these principles are non-negotiable, Prevot called on neighboring countries to “actively support de-escalation, dialogue and confidence-building efforts.”
