Trump says future of Iran deal will become clear within 10 days
Washington, February 20 (Hibya) - As the U.S. military buildup in the Middle East intensifies with the arrival of a second aircraft carrier strike group, U.S. President Donald Trump said it will become “probably clear within 10 days” whether the United States can reach a nuclear agreement with Iran.
Speaking at the opening meeting of the Peace Council in Washington, the U.S. president firmly stressed that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon and warned that “bad things will happen” if the country continues to threaten regional stability.
Offering a possible timeline, Trump said, “Maybe we’ll make a deal, but you’ll probably know within the next 10 days”; the United States is awaiting a response from Iran following talks held between the two countries on Tuesday.
White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Iranian officials in Geneva to discuss Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. The program was disrupted by U.S. and Israeli bombardment during the 12-day war last June but was not completely eliminated.
After the diplomatic talks, Iran pledged to respond within two weeks to U.S. demands to fully halt enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief; a timeline that is roughly consistent with the one put forward by Trump.
