Trump says he has withdrawn National Guard troops from some U.S. cities
Washington, January 1 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump said he has withdrawn National Guard troops from several U.S. cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles, following a Supreme Court ruling last week that weakened the authority to use troops for policing.
In a message posted on Truth Social on New Year’s Eve, Trump said, “If crime rates start rising again, perhaps we will return in a much different and much stronger way.”
Early Tuesday, the Trump administration abandoned its legal efforts to retain control over the troops deployed in Los Angeles. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump could not use troops for domestic security in Chicago.
Trump’s statement also mentioned Portland, Oregon, but did not refer to Washington, D.C., where troops are said to continue patrol duties.
Trump’s order to deploy National Guard troops to cities governed by Democrats led to a series of legal challenges questioning his authority to do so. The National Guard is normally under the authority of state governors.
