Ukraine’s first underground school opens in the Sumy region
Kyiv, November 5 (Hibya) – Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, announced that the country’s first underground school, built in the frontline Sumy region, has officially opened.
Yermak stated that the first underground school in Ukraine has begun operating in the Sumy region, which has been the target of Russian attacks. He noted that heavy bombardments, threats, and air raid sirens have become part of daily life for residents, adding: “The more the enemy tries to destroy the future, the more we rebuild it.”
“Here, children will not only study but also communicate and feel safe,” Yermak said, adding that over 170 similar facilities are under construction across the country. He reported that five underground schools have already been completed in the Sumy region, with eight more planned to open by the end of 2025.
Yermak highlighted that the state has invested more than 13 billion hryvnias in safe school projects over the past two years, saying: “We are not just building schools – we are creating spaces for knowledge, dreams, and opportunities.”
