Following a sluggish session for U.S. equities, stock futures traded nearly flat overnight.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 32 points, or 0.06 percent. S&P 500 futures slipped 0.07 percent, while Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.1 percent.

In regular trading on Tuesday, the major indexes posted small gains; the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rose about 0.1 percent. The 30-stock Dow gained roughly 32 points, or nearly 0.1 percent.

The software sector, already under pressure due to fears of disruption caused by artificial intelligence, declined during the session. CrowdStrike and ServiceNow fell 3.6 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively.

Keith Lerner of Truist Wealth said Tuesday on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” regarding the pullback in the technology sector, “No one knows exactly how this will play out. But from our perspective, at least expectations have been reset; if earnings meet expectations, even a small piece of good news could go a long way.”

“When we look at forward earnings estimates across sectors, the technology sector remains by far the strongest with about a 20 percent increase over the past four months... We still think it needs to be evaluated without any doubt,” the firm’s chief market strategist added.

On Wednesday, investors will watch the minutes from policymakers’ January meeting. However, the next major catalyst this week will likely be the personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE) data set to be released on Friday.

The PCE, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, will provide more insight into the state of the economy. According to Ameriprise chief market strategist Anthony Saglimbene, markets will “likely be in a semi-wait mode” ahead of the report, particularly as AI-related trading becomes increasingly complex.

On the earnings front, Booking Holdings, Carvana and DoorDash are expected to report on Wednesday.
