Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand made a statement on Canada’s Middle East policy and its vision for a two-state solution.

Recalling her country’s historical position, Anand said: “For more than 70 years, successive Canadian governments have held the view that a two-state solution is the path forward toward long-term peace that also addresses Israel’s legitimate security concerns.”

Minister Anand said settlement activity in the region damages the foundations for peace, stating: “Illegal settlements in the West Bank significantly undermine these objectives.”

Emphasizing that they are acting together with international allies, Anand said: “Today, together with the United Kingdom, France and many other international partners, Canada is supporting international law to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution.”

Announcing the trade measures to be taken, Foreign Minister Anand said: “In the coming months, we will introduce restrictions on trade in goods with settlements in the West Bank that are illegal under international law.”

Anand concluded her statement with the words: “Canada will continue to support efforts toward a lasting peace agreement that provides safety and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.”
