Araghchi calls for justice for victims of chemical attacks
Tehran, 26 November (Hibya) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the calls for justice by victims of chemical attacks must not be forgotten, urging Germany and other countries to disclose past investigations.
Araghchi stated that Iran’s unanimous election to the Executive Council of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is an important step for countries that believe in a world free from chemical weapons.
Recalling that tens of thousands of victims still suffer from Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks during the 1980–1988 Iran–Iraq War, he said: “The truth must come out, and those who supported Saddam’s chemical weapons program must be held accountable.”
He called on Germany to publish the results of past investigations and conduct full and transparent reviews of the role of its companies.
“The judicial investigations conducted by Dutch authorities, which resulted in the prosecution and conviction of a Dutch national, are commendable. But we all know this was only the most basic part — the visible tip of the iceberg,” he added.
Araghchi stressed that justice for chemical attack victims has been delayed, saying: “The victims’ calls for justice must not be forgotten.”
