China’s Ministry of Commerce responded to the US decision to impose tariffs on Chinese-origin semiconductor products under Section 301, stating that they firmly oppose this move and have made serious representations to the US administration.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced earlier that tariffs would be imposed on some Chinese-origin semiconductor products under Section 301. According to the announcement, the current tariff rate of zero percent is expected to increase after 18 months.

At a press conference held in Beijing, Ministry of Commerce spokesperson He Yongqian criticized the US’s unilateral tariff measures. He stated that this move violated World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, disrupted the global trade order, and caused chaos in supply chains. He also emphasized that this decision harmed US businesses and consumers, thus damaging the US itself.

Spokesperson He stated that China is ready to address concerns through equal dialogue based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. He warned that if the US insists on harming China’s interests, the Chinese government will take all necessary measures to protect its rights.
