Finland Breaks 50-Year Temperature Record Over the Weekend
Helsinki, July 28 (Hibya) – In the southern Finnish town of Parikkala, temperatures exceeded 30°C for the fourteenth consecutive day over the weekend, setting a new heat record.
The heatwave also affected Finland’s northern Lapland region, where temperatures have remained at or above 25°C for fifteen consecutive days, breaking a record that had stood for over fifty years.
This is the worst heatwave in Finland since 1961, the year official weather records began.
Meteorologists say a high-altitude system is responsible for the heat and drought. Wildfire warnings have been issued. The weather is expected to remain the same until tomorrow, when rain and storms are forecast to return.
