Guterres: Israel’s suspension of civil society organizations deepens the humanitarian crisis
New York, January 4 (Hibya) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reacted to Israel’s decision to suspend the activities of some international civil society organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling for the decision to be reversed and for uninterrupted humanitarian assistance.
UN Secretary-General Guterres said he is deeply concerned about the decision by Israeli authorities to suspend the operations of some international civil society organizations working in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Guterres stated: “International civil society organizations are indispensable for life-saving humanitarian assistance, and the suspension of their activities risks undermining the fragile progress achieved since the ceasefire.”
He noted that this decision adds to previous restrictions and delays the entry of critical food, medical supplies, hygiene items, and shelter assistance into Gaza, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian people.
Guterres emphasized that, under international humanitarian law, Israel must ensure the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian assistance for all civilians, and reiterated that all humanitarian partners must be able to operate safely and in line with humanitarian principles.
