Houthis threaten to continue attacks on ships
Stockholm, July 28 (Hibya) – Yahya Saree, the spokesperson for the Houthis in Yemen, threatened new attacks on ships linked to Israel in a televised speech.
In his speech broadcast on Sunday, the spokesperson stated that they would target all ships belonging to companies trading with Israeli ports. He emphasized that the country of origin of the companies is irrelevant and added that global powers could prevent escalation by pressuring the Israeli government to lift the Gaza blockade.
The Houthis and the United States reached a ceasefire agreement in May, which included halting attacks on ships off the coast of Yemen. The agreement did not cover the Houthis' conflict with Israel. Earlier this month, the Houthis sank two ships in the same week.
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, the Houthis have attacked ships they believe are heading to or associated with Israel. They claim that these attacks are a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In May, the US and the Houthis agreed to a ceasefire. Under the deal, the Houthis committed to stopping attacks on ships off Yemen's coast, while the US agreed to halt airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen.
