Thousands in Bulgaria protest controversial new budget plan
Sofia, 27 November (Hibya) – Thousands of protesters held a large demonstration in front of the parliament building in Sofia to protest the high taxes outlined in next year’s draft budget. Protesters formed a human chain around the building to prevent lawmakers from leaving.
Thousands of people took to the streets of the Bulgarian capital on Wednesday evening to oppose the high taxes proposed in next year’s budget ahead of the final parliamentary vote.
The opposition coalition composed of “We Continue the Change” and “Democratic Bulgaria” organized the rally, which saw the participation of around 20,000 protesters. The demonstration took place as the Balkan country prepares to join the Eurozone early next year.
Authorities reported that three police officers were injured while trying to maintain public order as tensions escalated. Clashes and scuffles between protesters and riot police were also reported.
