FT: US insists that Kyiv’s territorial concessions are inevitable
Stockholm, 11 December (Hibya) – According to sources cited by the Financial Times, the United States believes that Ukraine giving up some of its territory is inevitable as part of a peace agreement.
FT wrote: “Officials in the Trump administration, particularly Whitkoff, have in recent weeks been pressuring Ukrainian negotiators over what they see as an inevitable part of any peace deal — a territorial exchange.”
According to anonymous Kyiv officials who spoke to the newspaper, the U.S. President’s special envoy is “obsessed” with the idea that a fair peace could be achieved if Ukraine gives up the remaining part of Donbas, thus preventing a longer and more destructive conflict.
On Tuesday, Trump told Zelensky to pull himself together and accept the proposed conditions because he is “losing.” The American leader said that Russia is far stronger than Ukraine and holds the advantage in the conflict.
Last week, Vladimir Putin hosted Whitkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner at the Kremlin. The two sides discussed the essence of the American peace initiative for nearly five hours, but no agreement has yet been reached.
The Russian leader later stated that Washington had divided the original 27-point plan into four packages and proposed discussing them separately. He added that he had reviewed almost each of them and that “there are points with which Moscow does not agree.”
