Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met with leading figures from the world of football at the Palácio do Planalto.

Emphasizing the inspirational power of the World Cup, Lula said: “We discussed how this World Cup could become a turning point for women’s football, how it could strengthen the spread of sport across the country, and how it could inspire girls and boys throughout Brazil.”

Stating that the event would not be limited to sports alone, Lula added: “We emphasized the importance of using the visibility of the event to address social issues, especially the fight against violence against women. I am confident that together we will make this World Cup a historic moment for sport and for our country.”
