Sybiha: Russian attacks damaged the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Kyiv, January 26 (Hibya) – Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha stated that during Russia’s attacks on January 24, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was damaged.
Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha made a statement regarding Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual values.
Drawing attention to the damage sustained by the sacred site, Sybiha said: “On January 24, Russian attacks damaged the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. This sacred site has been damaged for the first time since the Second World War.”
Emphasizing that the attacks have become systematic, Sybiha stated: “This follows a pattern of Russia’s repeated and systematic attacks on Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual values, as well as its relentless attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and civilians. Russia must be held accountable for attacks on our heritage, our faith, and our cultural symbols.”
Calling on the international community and UNESCO to take action, Sybiha concluded his statement by saying: “We expect UNESCO to respond decisively, including through public condemnation, documentation of the damage, and the strengthening of international actions to protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage.”
